In 1955, when colour had yet to be invented, Farmer Giles was working on his fields when he encountered some mysterious, monstrous characters. He described them as “big monkeys wearing crash helmets coming out of a huge, round saucer ship.” The poor farmer had no idea that this was none other than Space Ape and his crew looking to cause trouble. Just as these ghastly aliens were about to blast Giles with their ray guns the unsuspecting farmer was to have another surprise visitor.
“There was a flash and a rumble like thunder,” he told the newspapers, “then an aircraft like I’ve never seen before came blasting out of the sky. I looked into the cockpit and saw there was a rabbit of all things flying it! Those monkeys ran back to that big, round metal thing and it took off like a rocket. If it wasn’t for that thunder rabbit I think I would have had big trouble with those monkeys. I may not have been around to tell you my tale!”
Of course nobody believed a word of Farmer Giles’ story but it was printed just the same. He went back to his fields to try and sort out his carrot crop that had been trampled by Space Ape and his crew.
The nickname Thunder Rabbits stuck. The secret Lapine Forces of Commander Grey Hare had for years been operating out of Bunny Island for years, protecting Earth, it’s people and carrot crops from invading aliens.
Now they had a cool name that would be feared by evil creatures all across the universe . . .
